New members saying Hello

Post by Rick Bear »

Hello Everyone,
My name is Rick, and I appear to be the first member of Rob Trek's new Olympus photography forum.

Hopefully, many more of Rob's fans will be joining me shortly. And, as it's always nice to know who everyone is, I'll give a brief introduction to who I am.

I'm a professional photographer and technologist, dating back to the days when cameras used proper film. My specialism has always been technical photography, especially for product photography, extreme expeditions (like taking my Olympus OM-1 down dark, very wet, caves), and aviation photography.

I'm also heavily involved with technical training, and came across Rob when I needed information on how the various settings work on my Olympus OM-D series digital cameras. As a training consultant, I can say that Rob is one of the most talented natural educators I've ever had the pleasure to meet. (What on earth he's doing in real estate, I've no idea!)

Anyway, that's me in brief. I hope I may look forward to meeting many more of you in the very near future.

Hello Rick Bear, my name is Maggie (a.k.a. The MagRat) and I am a cat.

Actually, I'm your cat, so don't forget to feed me.

Those are very nice pictures of me that Rick has posted, so you'll know that I am a very beautiful cat and that I take a very nice picture.

My new book will be coming out later this year, so you'll all be able to rush out and buy a copy.

Meanwhile, I'm now very tired, so going for a nap...

Same as Rick mentioned, I discovered the Rob Trek youtube channel while searching for supplemental information regarding the Olympus in-camera menu. The livestream sessions, I've skimmed most of those (2x speed) but... the repetitive questions, and vapid questions like "Which lens should I get to go with these shoes?" are a turnoff. Surely the time could be put to better use. Maybe someone (plural) who attends the livestream will volunteer to post show notes in the forum, timestamped links (?) pointing to specific question/answers as they are covered -- perhaps live blogging style, as individual tweety posts added to a forum topic associated with the current livestream episode.

Back in the late 70's I shot & developed black-n-white... then lost interest in photography until well into the digital age. No fancy gear, just Canon Powershot A75 thru A620 & dabbling with CHDK (Canon Hackers Development Kit). Through the years, I have repeatedly purchased A620 -ish cams on ebay and gifted them to kids. When possible, I also coached them in setting up tethering and remote shooting -- especially macro shots, kewl (gross) stuff like dead insects retrieved with tweezers from the sills between window screens and windowpanes.

Now grandpa age, I've never moved beyond Windows7 (instead using linux -based operating systems throughout the past decade) and have become out of touch with current software availability. Late last year, after investigating which among the recent crop of digicams were capable of tethered shooting (and comparing the features of various available tethering software) I purchased a used Olympus E-M5 Mark ii. I have discovered that, yes, thankfully the current version OlympusCapture and OlympusWorkspace run under Windows7. Also, the hacked firmware enabling focus stacking using any lens (vs just nosebleed-priced select OlyPRO lenses) and extended video recording... seems to be providing trouble-free operation.

Thanks. That's interesting about the hack allowing focus stacking and unlimited recording. I'm a bit too skittish to try that.
