Initial Impressions on DXO Kodak Portra 160 NC Film Simulation
Posted: 28 May 2021 17:02
I wanted to compare the DXO Film Pack - Kodak Portra 160 NC simulation to the actual Kodak Portra 160 film. Here are some images I took using my Digital PenF vs actual film. I corrected for White Balance and minor exposure and cropping differences only. Film was scanned with my flatbed Epson V550.
My initial observations are that sometimes it's really close and other times not so much. I think the challenge comes whenever there is a significant white balance change from sunny areas to shadow areas. Film is sometimes unpredictable when it comes to white balance, especially in shadows. Digital seems to show fairly consistently whatever white balance is happening pixel by pixel. Also, the images from film were not as contrasty. I think this is due more to the vintage lenses, especially on the Minolta. I could have added some contrast but I wanted to show the files as natively as possible.
It's really difficult to get that true film look with digital files. Still, I think on some shots it did a really good job and this seems to be the closest we can get for now.
I bought the DXO Film Pack Elite because it has many more features to help get our digital files looking more like film. I will do some further editing using to see how close I can get and share my settings and results here.

I'd love to hear your comments on the results and see some of your images using the film simulations, especially if you can compare them directly to digital as I've done here.
