Focus box jumps around

Post by Oly_shooter »

I’m out this morning trying to shoot some plants in the backyard with the soft morning light. My EM5II was set to SAF, A priority, low iso. The green focus box would be on the point I wanted it to focus on but when I pressed the shutter release half way down, it jumped to a different target. What’s up with that?

Could it be that you incidently moved the focus point using the touch screen ?
It occured more that once to me as i am a left eye shooter and my nose is in the way...

If you had the camera pressed up against your nose, that can sometimes move the focus point. Otherwise, try turning the touch screen off and see if you still get the same behavior. If so, then there is something wrong. Also try cleaning the live view screen.

Pressing the shutter release button half way is what tells the camera to autofocus. So, you need to point your focus box at wherever you want your focus to be, then half press the shutter release to tell the camera "focus here" before (while keeping that button half pressed) you move the viewfinder to frame your shot.

When you half press the shutter release button, it tells the camera to autofocus AND locks that focus point until you either: a) fully press the shutter release, or b) release your half pressure on the shutter release button.

Try practicing half pressing the shutter button, keeping it pressed while you move the viewfinder around, then fully pressing the shutter release or releasing that half pressure. You'll soon get the hang of it.
