Dynamic vs. Condenser mic's 9 aug chat

Rob. on your live chat on the 9th you mentioned changing from the Fifine (??) condenser mic to a dynamic mic. I always thought dynamic mic's where worse than condenser mic's. Maybe I'm stuck in the 60's! I seems that if you really want to tweak the mic, then you need a mixer/preamp, independent of the mic type. The other type of mic I can think of was a ribbon type, those I believe are big bucks! It would be interesting to hear from someone that is an actual expert, I certainly not.
