I went out yesterday to try again with my 75-300mm. Here is the best I could do. Straight out of camera jpg. I may have to wait until summer to get some decent light. Shutter speed was just too slow to handhold and capture a tiny bird like this that was about 100 meters away.
Hi Rob
I think that this photo is pretty good considering the available light and the distance you were from the bird. Its a pity you were so far away from it. I am sure if you could get a lot closer ( 20 feet) then you would have much better result. In my experience a tripod is a must for birds if you haven’t got bright light and have to drop your shutter speed.

Thanks. I always forget to bring something. Tripod, flash, memory card, you name it!
We have all done it!
